II. Conversation model on WhatsApp API

1. Conversation classification:

In Whatsapp API, a conversation would be classified into four types:

  • Marketing: this type of message comprises various marketing purposes, ranging from raising awareness, promotion notice, product information to new features and remarketing …

  • Utility: update information, order status, account notice, survey …

  • Authentication: send OTP to customers.

  • Service: answering questions from customers (user-initiated)

2. Introduction to conversation of WA API:

WA API charges you with the conversation model - where 24-hour message threads are counted rather than individual messages.

Each conversation of Whatsapp API is a 24-hour message threads between you and your customers, starting from the moment your customers receive your message.

When you send the template successfully to start the conversation with your customer, Pancake will temporarily charge you with the corresponding cost.

When the customers receive the message, we will return your money if it’s a free conversation according to the data on Webhook.

Note:

  • This is the prepaid logic, If you plan to send 1000 templates, ensure your wallet has sufficient funds to cover these costs.

  • You'll have 1000 free service templates to respond to your customers monthly. However, maintain your account with at least 5 USD to use them.

In 24 hours, you can be charged twice for 2 types of templates. Please take a look at these examples for more details:

Example 1: Business initially sends marketing template, charged only once

In example 1, the you are only charged once (at T0) when you send marketing template. Before receiving replies, you can’t freely send messages but can continuously follow your customer by other marketing templates without being charged.

Although following customers by using the same type of template isn’t charged, you should carefully consider before sending more ‘cause you might get blocked or reported spam by your customers. This will certainly affect your number quality, which leads to limits in the future.

Example 2: Business initially sends marketing and utility templates, charged twice

In the example 2, when business successfully send a marketing template, you will be charged 1 time for opening the marketing template thread. After sending a utility template, another 24h thread will be opened. So that the business will be charged twice, one for each thread.

Example 3: Business answers customers, charged once

In this scenario, from the moment business receives messages from customers, the service thread has already been activated but the business hasn’t been charged. Only when you reply, you get charged.

Example 4: Business answers customers, then send another template, charged twice

This time the business will be charged for the service thread when you reply. While chatting, if the business sends marketing template, another marketing thread will be opened and you’ll get charged for that.

Upon replying, you will be charged for the service thread. While chatting, if you send a marketing template, another marketing thread will be opened and you’ll get charged for that.
